How much exercise do you really need?
According to medical practitioners there is broad consensus that we all need at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise, some strength training and stretching each week, a commitment of 30 minutes per day for five days each week. In addition to regular purposeful exercise, healthcare professionals recommend that you stay as active as you can. Research has shown that even regular exercisers (30 minutes a day or more) can experience negative health effects if they are sedentary the rest of the time.
This web-page will be dedicated to sharing information on exercise and activity opportunities your alumni peers have discovered.
How fit are you?
Physical fitness is very important to good health. You may not add a lot of years to your life but you will enjoy life for more years. Fitness keeps you independent in your later years and helps to ward off age onset diseases of the mind and body. Your body’s capacity to transport and use oxygen during exercise (VO2 max) is the most precise measure of overall cardiovascular fitness. Based on the extensive research of The K. G. Jebsen Center of Exercise in Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, you can easily estimate your fitness level by answering a few questions. The assessment tool compares you to norms for your age group. Obviously the goal is to perform better than the average for your age group.
